Finding really cheap airline tickets, surprisingly, can be one of the most enjoyable and spontaneous ways to take a vacation. There are some fairly obvious ways to go about this: using the Internet; using travel agents and so forth, but there are some truly innovative ways that one can go about saving potentially hundreds of dollars on an airfare if they have within them a love of spontaneity and, perhaps, a bit of the spirit of the stowaways who used to use some innovative methods to take a ship to whatever port happened to be on the schedule.

If one wants tickets really cheap, the farther one books ahead the better. Most often, the closer to one's flight date that one wishes to book their tickets the more expensive the price. It's better to plan a vacation far in advance and to purchase the tickets as soon as the dates are set. The airlines let these tickets go cheap because it allows them to guarantee that the seats are sold well in advance. If one needs to change flights, the changes will likely cost a bit less, as well, if they are booked a long time ahead of the vacation.
