Popular Destinations for Baby Boomers

Roughly 28 percent of America’s current population was born between 1946 and 1964. These are the “baby boomers” whose name comes from the post-World War II increase in child births around the nation. Today they add up to around 75 million people, and are among the most active, educated and well-traveled generations the country has ever seen.

Interestingly only one in twenty “boomers” relocates away from their hometown, but more than seventy percent of all boomers feel that travel is an essential. Statistics show that they take an average of two extended trips each year. Where do they go? The most popular locations for baby boomer travel include:

Branson, Missouri – not only is this the entertainment capital of the country, but it is also considered one of the most “traveler friendly” as well. Stage and floor shows around the clock, outdoor activities in the Ozark Mountains just outside of the city and dozens of well-priced lodges, hotels and B&Bs make this a perennial favorite with baby boomers.

America’s Battlefields – interestingly many baby boomers head to the country’s battlefields for their history and scenic beauty. Famous locations such as Bunker Hill in Massachusetts and Gettysburg in Pennsylvania offer driving, walking and hiking tours and are set within interesting towns and cities. There are many battlefields up and down the east coast and some further inland as well, and visitor statistics prove that it is the boomers that turn up in the largest numbers.

Nashville, Tennessee – whether they’re country music fans or not, millions of baby boomers have made a trip to this wonderful city. The many incredible hotels and restaurants add to the appeal of such destinations as the Grand Ole Opry and Belle Meade Plantation and make the many area festivals accessible to thousands of visitors each year.

Pigeon Forge, Tennessee – the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the primary reason that so many boomers head to this small city. Over the years the tourism in the area has allowed it to become a wonderful destination in itself with local artisans selling their goods all along a set driving route and such locations as Dollywood which offers rides, local foods and all kinds of entertainment.

Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia – there is not much that can compare with an experience like Colonial Williamsburg. Beautifully preserved and restored buildings and settlements, costumed interpreters and some of the best museums documenting the colonial period in the United States make this one of the most frequently visited locations in the entire country, and not just by the boomers!
